Requests its 3.5 lakh members to voluntarily get vaccinated

The Indian Medical Association (IMA), on Monday, in an official statement, said that after an extensive review of scientific data, indexed articles, and expert panel reports and in discussion with IMA, ICMR and WHO experts, they have decided to actively take part in the mission of Covid19 Vaccination programme rolled out by Government of India.

Besides, it requested its 3.5 lakh members in 1800 Local branches to voluntarily come out to get vaccinated first to show to the world that these vaccines are safe and efficacious.

Divulging details, IMA President, Punjab Unit, Paramjit Mann, said that IMA appreciates and congratulates the hard works of Indian Scientists, Modern Medicine Doctors and the government for bringing out two Indian vaccines against SARS Covid-19. Bharat Biotech has developed a whole viron inactivated vaccine (COVAXIN) and Serum Institute of India, Pune a recombinant chimpanzee adenovirus vector vaccine (COVISHIELD) are our Indian Vaccines. These vaccines are practically easy to store and used in Indian Condition, he said.

Dr Mann said that it is a proud moment for the nation as we are heading towards becoming super power with Research and Development in the field of modern medicine. “IMA rightfully stands firm as the natural and professional stakeholder in this achievement not only in the development of the vaccine but also in delivering the vaccine. All infrastructure facilities of IMA branches across the country will be available voluntarily for this vaccination programme and all our members of Indian Medical Association will voluntarily serve with technical and supportive manpower”, he added.

Dr Mann also said that IMA Punjab believes getting vaccination is not only to protect individual but to bring herd immunity to the community thereby raising the hope to control the corona pandemic.

“We stand with the scientists to endorse the safety and efficacy of both these vaccines, so public awareness and countering with myths on vaccine percolating in social media shall be our priority. Our Modern Medicine Doctors will vouch for the safety, quality and professionalism in this difficult time and support the emergency approval for the usage of vaccines”, he said.

Further Dr Supreek Kaur Virk, Secretary, IMA unit Phagwara, said, “We are giving full support to the vaccination drive. We had organized an awareness meet with civil authorities and private practitioners. Besides, we have decided to actively participate in dry run of vaccination and were briefed about the preparedness of civil authorities”.

“We appeal to the public even after vaccination, to adhere to the Covid appropriate behavior like masks, physical distancing, hand hygiene and respiratory hygiene”, she said, adding that Indian Medical Association Headquarters has also constituted a Pharmacovigilance Centre in IMA HQs Building, New Delhi for monitoring post vaccination reactions and render appropriate support.
