MP Tewari criticises move to postpone PU Senate elections

The MP said, the term of the last Senate was till 31st October 2020, and of Syndicate was till 31st December 2020. The Panjab University is now being run without its governing body for about last one year.

Senior National Spokesperson of the Congress and Shri Anandpur Sahib MP Manish Tewari today criticized the decision to postpone the elections of ‘Registered Graduate Constituency’ of Punjab University senate.

In a statement issued here today, he said, this move is against the democratic set up of our country. Criticising the move, he said, it restrains the participation of the alumni of PU in being part of governance of this institution.

“I myself being a part of Alumni of PU feel that, this move will result in disassociating the Alumni from this prestigious institution”, he said, while adding, “whereas, we all being stakeholders of education and part of Alumni of Panjab University, should play our role for the University-Alumni bridge and University-Industry bridge to generate and strengthen the support system for our Alma-mater”.

Tewari said, this prestigious institute of higher learning was established in 1882, as University of Punjab (Now in Lahore Pakistan) and has a glorious history being the fourth oldest institute of higher learning in India. In 1947, after independence & partition of India, Panjab University got its present feature & placed at new city Chandigarh.

At present it has around 188 affiliated colleges in six districts of Punjab i.e. Ludhiana, Hoshiarpur (including Balachaur), Moga, Mukatsar, Ferozepur & Fazilka, Including all colleges in UT Chandigarh. Besides, it has Regional Centres at; Rural RC at Kauni Muktsar, RC Muktsar, RC Hoshiarpur & RC Ludhiana. Panjab University is a body corporate, funded by centre & state of Punjab.

 Tewari sought the intervention of the Chancellor of Panjab University and Vice President of India, Venkaiah Naidu to act upon to save the spirit of democracy in Panjab University at Chandigarh
