Poisonous mushrooms kill 2, sicken 8 in southwest China

Poisonous mushrooms have killed two people and sickened 8 others in southwest China's Yunnan Province since June this year, authorities said

Kunming: Poisonous mushrooms have killed two people and sickened 8 others in southwest China's Yunnan Province since June this year, authorities said.

According to the provincial center for disease control and prevention, the fatalities involved in two cases were both reported in the county of Mengla. The victims all consumed the Russula subnigricans hongo mushrooms, which could cause acute intravascular hemolysis, or even acute renal failure.

Russula subnigricans hongo mushrooms are one of the poisonous mushrooms commonly found in Yunnan. They look quite similar to two other types of edible mushrooms.

Yunnan has entered the high season of mushroom consumption, but cases of fatalities have been reported as some residents ate poisonous mushrooms by mistake.
