Virat Kohli went past Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar for the most double hundreds in Test cricket by an Indian. Kohli now has 7 double centuries in 81 Tests.

Virender Sehwag made 6 double centuries from 104 Tests while Sachin Tendulkar had 6 double hundreds in 200 Test matches. Kohli brought up his 7th double hundred in the second Test of a 3-match series against South Africa.

Virat Kohli is now joint 4th in the list of most double centuries in Tests with Wally Hammond of England and Mahela Jayawardene of Sri Lanka. Only Don Bradman (12), Kumar Sangakkara (11) and Brian Lara (9) have more Test double hundreds than Kohli.

Incidentally, Virat Kohli had not scored a single Test hundred this year in 4 matches before Pune. In fact, Kohli had last scored a hundred in Test cricket in December 2018 against Australia in Perth.

In 2017, Virat Kohli became the only man to score double hundreds in 4 successive Test series. No other captain has scored more double hundreds than Kohli.

All of Kohli's double hundreds have come as captain. In 2014, after MS Dhoni retired from Test cricket, Virat Kohli took over and brought about an immediate transformation to the Indian team.

He now has 40 international hundreds as captain, 19 of them in Tests and 21 in ODIs.

Virat Kohli's first double hundred came against West Indies in North Sound in 2016. Later that year, he scored 211 against New Zealand in the first series of a long home season. Kohli followed that up with a fine 235 against England in Mumbai and a 204 against Bangladesh in Hyderabad.
