Mecca’s Hajj Pilgrimage deaths 2024: a tragedy or an annual occurrence?

The Hajj Pilgrimage is a sacred pilgrimage attended by millions of Muslims from across the world.

It is performed on the eighth and thirtheenth of Dhu al-Hijjah, the final month in the Islamic calendar.

For the past several years the hajj has fallen during the sweltering Saudi summer.

This year, the death toll is being reported to be 645 so far.

68 Indian nationals have reportedly died during the hajj pilgrimage this year.

Earlier counts indicated 550 deaths which included 323 Egyptians and 60 Jordanians.

Fatalities have also been confirmed by Indonesia, Iran, Senegal, Tunisia and Kurdistan region in Iraq.

Last year more than 200 pilgrims were reported dead, most of them from Indonesia.

“This happens every year... We can't say that it is abnormally high this year, informed a Saudi Arabian diplomat.
