On May 24, multiple districts of Punjab were hit by a severe thunderstorm. The major cities that were impacted by the thunderstorm were Jalandhar, Ludhiana, and Amritsar. The thunderstorm was so strong that multiple iron poles in residential and commercial areas collapsed. Deaths were also reported in Jalandhar and other districts of Punjab due to strong thunderstorms on Saturday night. In Jalandhar, many areas remained without electricity for many hours. Now, the India Meteorological Department of Chandigarh unit has issued a fresh thunderstorm prediction in Punjab.
As per IMD Chandigarh, multiple districts of Punjab will witness Saturday-like thunderstorms for at least 4 days. Below is the date and place, as per IMD's prediction-
As per IMD's prediction, the regions mentioned above are likely to witness thunderstorms along with lightning. Furthermore, strong winds at 50-60 kmph are expected to blow during this weather.
As per reports, the storm was the result of a sudden interaction between a western disturbance and warm, moisture-laden air over northern India. This clash of systems caused a sharp drop in atmospheric pressure, leading to violent gusts of wind and localized thunderstorms.
It is said that the high daytime temperatures over the last few days have created an unstable weather pattern. When the western disturbance moved in from Afghanistan and Pakistan, it triggered convective activity, leading to the intense dust storm and rainfall witnessed across central and northern Punjab.
Amid rainfall predictions, Punjab on Sunday got some relief from soaring temperatures. As per IMD Chandigarh, Amritsar's maximum temperature on May 25 was 34.7°C, Ludhiana- 35.2°C, Patiala- 33°C, Pathankot- 34.3°C, Bathinda- 33°C, Gurdaspur- 33.5°C, etc.
