Christmas chill has firmly set in over Jalandhar, with temperatures predicted to slip down to the season’s lowest around Christmas, turning what began as a bright, sunny stretch into a noticeably sharper winter spell. Clear skies and calm winds are expected to stick around night-time cooling, tightening winter’s grip on the city although the afternoons are expected to stay comfortably mild.
As per weather predictions The week opens on a pleasant note, with maximum temperatures hovering close to 21–22°C under clear skies and abundant sunshine. Although the IMD Chandigarh has issued watch warnings for 20th, 21st and 22nd for scattered rain in specific areas like, Amritsar, Tarn-taran, Gurdaspur and areas around. Mornings and late evenings, however, now carry a more distinct nip, with minimums already slipping into single digits around 8–9°C in several parts of Jalandhar.
As Christmas approaches, the cooling trend becomes more pronounced, with forecast charts indicating minimum temperatures dropping further towards 5–7°C on the coldest nights. Daytime highs are likely to settle around 18–
20°C, making the overall feel significantly colder than last week despite sunny skies.
Around Christmas Day, Jalandhar is expected to witness its sharpest chill of the season so far, with clear nights allowing heat to escape quickly from the surface. This radiational cooling pattern, typical for late December in northwestern India, can push early-morning “feels-like” temperatures even lower than the actual readings, especially in open and less-built-up areas.
Met experts link the chill to a combination of factors: clearer skies, light winds and dry air, all of which favour faster night-time heat loss. With no major western disturbance bringing cloud cover or rain over central Punjab in the immediate term, the region remains exposed to uninterrupted night cooling.
The colder mornings are expected to affect school-going children, early morning commuters, and outdoor workers the most. This, in turn, increases the use of layers, heaters, and hot water beverages across all households. In fact, weather forecasts indicate that this pattern of chilly mornings with relatively comfortable afternoons will persist beyond Christmas, marking the effective arrival of peak winter in Jalandhar.
