92 Amritsar passengers stranded in Nepal during curfew, protests and arson

Security agencies are keeping a close eye on the situation, but the group is still not allowed to return to India.

A batch of 92 travelers from Punjab's Amritsar, stranded in Nepal, have fallen victim to deteriorating unrest characterized by curfew, demonstrations, and fires. 

As per the reports, the passengers are stranded along the Nepal-India border at Bhairahawa waiting for the clearance so they can return back to their home safely 

But the situation following their inability to return due to security concerns.

Departure and travel information: The pilgrimage group left Amritsar on September 3 and crossed into Nepal on September 5, reaching Janakpur Dham. They proceeded to Kathmandu on September 6 and Pokhara afterwards. Although their pilgrimage continued as normal initially, following September 8 the situation in Nepal sharply deteriorated with widespread protests and violent incidents.

Night travel amidst tensions: With security apprehensions rising, the group decided to travel overnight. Rinku Batwal posted a video saying that on September 9 they were in Pokhara during curfew and protests, with young people riding scooters and burning fires of arson around their hotel. The group departed for the border at night between September 9-10.

Stranded on Bhairahawa border: They traveled overnight to reach Bhairahawa border on September 10 but have since been held up there as security is increased following disturbances. Security authorities are keeping the situation under check, but the group continues to be unable to move back into India. They are keen to go back home peacefully.

Increased border security: Indian troops have raised alert levels and enforced stringent checks along the Indo-Nepal border taking into account the growing violence in Nepal. Temporary curbs are enforced at various points. Governments are making lists of citizens marooned in Nepal to ensure their safe return.

Background of unrest in Nepal: Local news reports that dozens killed and hundreds injured as protests escalate. Both mobs and security forces are accused of violence and destruction of public assets. The atmosphere of fear is gripping civilians as well as foreign visitors; most do not venture out of their homes, but others stream to border regions. The situation is still tense with uncertain expectations for near-term normalization.
