Is Jalandhar Cantt heading towards a major 2027 hot seat battle?

Political tides shift as Jalandhar Cantt gears up for a pivotal 2027 showdown

Jalandhar Cantt is emerging as a closely watched Assembly constituency ahead of the 2027 Punjab elections, with the seat carrying added political significance after its sitting MLA Pargat Singh was appointed Punjab Congress president.

Pargat Singh’s political journey

Pargat Singh, a former Indian hockey captain and current Jalandhar Cantt MLA, was appointed president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee on October 2, replacing Amarinder Singh Raja Warring. His appointment comes ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections and puts the constituency he represents at the centre of attention within Punjab politics.

Pargat has a long electoral association with the seat.

Jalandhar Cantt’s political record

In the 2002 Assembly election, the older Jullundur Cantonment seat was won by Congress candidate Gurkanwal Kaur, who secured 29,160 votes and defeated Shiromani Akali Dal candidate Paramjit Singh by 10,853 votes.

In 2007, SAD's Jagbir Singh Brar won the Jullundur Cantonment seat with 50,436 votes, defeating Gurkanwal Kaur by 16,984 votes. These two elections were held before the 2008 delimitation and therefore do not represent exactly the same constituency boundaries as the present-day Jalandhar Cantt seat.

The post-delimitation electoral record begins with the 2012 election. Pargat Singh, then contesting on an SAD ticket, won with 48,290 votes. He defeated Congress candidate Jagbir Singh Brar by 6,798 votes.

Pargat Singh’s party switch

Pargat then switched to Congress and won the seat again in 2017. He polled 59,349 votes and defeated SAD candidate Sarabjit Singh Makkar by 29,124 votes. AAP candidate Harkrishan Singh Walia finished third with 25,912 votes.

2022’s close call

The 2022 election was considerably closer. Pargat Singh retained the seat for Congress with 40,816 votes, while AAP candidate Surinder Singh Sodhi received 35,008 votes. Pargat's winning margin was 5,808 votes.

The result was not a simple two-way contest. SAD candidate Jagbir Singh Brar polled 27,387 votes, while BJP candidate Sarabjit Singh Makkar received 15,946 votes. Pargat's vote share was about 33 per cent, with the AAP candidate at about 28 per cent, SAD at about 22 per cent and BJP at about 13 per cent. The numbers show that the 2022 contest was divided among several parties rather than being a near two-way race.

Seat’s political importance

The seat's political importance has also increased because of developments involving senior leaders with links to Jalandhar.

Possible BJP candidates

There is also political discussion around BJP leaders Ashok Mittal and Harbhajan Singh. Both were AAP Rajya Sabha MPs who moved to the BJP in April 2026. Their presence in the BJP does not, by itself, establish that either has been selected or is being considered as the party's candidate from Jalandhar Cantt. No such candidature has been officially announced.

CM Mann’s role

With Jalandhar Cantt gaining greater political attention ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, it is being discussed that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) may field a prominent candidate from the constituency, given the importance the seat could assume in the upcoming election. The possibility of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann contesting from Jalandhar Cantt has also been discussed in political circles. However, there is no official confirmation from AAP regarding either a candidate or Mann’s candidature from the seat.

Close call for 2027

For now, the 2027 candidate list for Jalandhar Cantt remains unsettled. Pargat Singh's appointment as Punjab Congress chief, however, makes the constituency particularly significant for the Congress as the party prepares for the Assembly election.

What next?

With the next Assembly election approaching, Jalandhar Cantt is therefore a seat to watch, but calling it Punjab's "biggest Assembly battle" would be an assessment rather than an established fact. The eventual importance of the contest will depend on which parties field candidates and how the electoral battle develops.
