Modi cabinet reshuffle speculation grows: Several Punjab faces emerge in Ministerial race

Modi’s expected Cabinet shake-up puts Punjab in spotlight as BJP weighs new faces to boost 2027 Assembly poll prospects

Possibility of a major Union Cabinet reshuffle by Narendra Modi government has once again become biggest topic of discussion in political circles and although Central Government has not made any official announcement yet but reports suggest that changes in Union Council of Ministers could take place on June 28 or June 29 and for Punjab this reshuffle is being watched very closely because Assembly elections are due next year, so political observers believe BJP may use Cabinet reshuffle to strengthen its position in state before 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.

George Kurian’s resignation

One major reason behind the speculation is resignation of Union Minister of State George Kurian after end of his Rajya Sabha term, PM Modi accepted his resignation but no such decision has been taken in case of Ravneet Bittu whose Rajya Sabha term also ended on June 21 and this has further increased speculation about Punjab's representation in Union Cabinet.

What is the situation with Ravneet Bittu?

At present Ravneet Singh Bittu is only Union Minister of State from Punjab and he currently handles Railways and Food Processing portfolios as Minister of State and although his Rajya Sabha term has ended the Constitution allows a minister to continue in office for six months without being a Member of Parliament and this means Bittu can remain a minister until around December if he is not re elected before then meanwhile political observers believe BJP may not immediately remove him because he is considered one of party's prominent Sikh leaders in Punjab and with Assembly elections approaching removing him now may not send right political message.

Bittu & Punjab elections

There is also growing speculation that BJP may ask Bittu to return to active Punjab politics and contest the upcoming Assembly elections that are due and the party has followed a similar strategy in past by moving Union ministers into important state election battles and one example is senior BJP leader Narendra Singh Tomar who left Union Cabinet to contest Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections in 2023 and later became Speaker of state Assembly so many analysts believe a similar strategy could be adopted in Punjab if party feels Bittu's presence is needed on ground.

If Bittu moves out, who could replace him?

Several Punjab names are being discussed although none has been officially confirmed.

Raghav Chadha

Perhaps of the most talked about name is Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha as Chadha was earlier one of the most prominent faces of AAP and he also played a major role in AAP's national politics and was one of party's key campaigners during 2022 Punjab Assembly elections and earlier this year he left AAP along with several Rajya Sabha MPs and joined BJP but since joining BJP his name has repeatedly appeared in reports linked to the Cabinet reshuffle and he is seen as a young, educated and media friendly leader who understands Punjab politics well and if appointed as a Union Minister he could become one of BJP's major campaign faces for 2027 Assembly elections.

His experience inside AAP could also help BJP challenge the ruling party's narrative in Punjab and he is considered capable of attracting urban voters, professionals and the business community however, there is another view as well since Chadha joined BJP only recently some political observers believe long-time BJP workers may not welcome such a quick promotion.

Tarun Chugh

Another important name is Tarun Chugh and he is currently BJP National General Secretary and has long been associated with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), he recently entered Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh and is regarded as one of BJP's strongest organisational leaders so within party Chugh enjoys confidence of the central leadership however political observers point out that while he has a strong organisational background his direct mass appeal in Punjab is considered more limited compared to some other leaders so because of this, some analysts believe appointing him as a Union Minister may not provide BJP with as much electoral benefit in Punjab as some younger faces might.

Ashok Kumar Mittal

Lovely Professional University Chancellor Ashok Kumar Mittal is also being discussed as a possible choice as Mittal who entered Parliament through Rajya Sabha and later joined BJP after leaving AAP is regarded as a respected educationist and businessman with strong links to Punjab's industrial and academic sectors. Supporters believe his clean image and business background could help BJP connect with entrepreneurs, professionals and education sector.

Satnam Singh Sandhu

Rajya Sabha MP Satnam Singh Sandhu is another name being mentioned. Sandhu is Chancellor of Chandigarh University and has built an image through education and skill development so reports suggest his name is also under consideration as BJP looks for Sikh representation from the region however no official confirmation has been made.

Other possible names in the list

Some political observers have also discussed former Indian cricketer and Rajya Sabha MP Harbhajan Singh as a possible option as Harbhajan remains one of Punjab's most recognised sports personalities and his popularity among young voters and his national image could make him an attractive political face if BJP wants to surprise everyone with a fresh choice however his name remains only part of political speculation, and there is no official indication that he is being considered for a ministerial berth.

The name of Sardar Iqbal Singh has also surfaced in discussions as he has a long association with BJP and has served the party for many years however some political observers believe BJP may prefer projecting younger leaders ahead of 2027 elections so if that strategy is followed senior leaders like Iqbal Singh may find themselves behind younger contenders.

BJP's balancing strategy

Political observers also believe BJP may try to maintain social balance while selecting ministers from Punjab and one possibility being discussed is giving representation to both a Hindu and a Sikh face so that the party can strengthen its outreach across different sections of voters before Assembly elections.
