Sunny Leone has embarked on a Bollywood career that is gradually taking shape, moving away from her previous life as a porn star.
However, this is a far different from her previous life, when she made a living as a star in the adult film industry.
Sunny openly discusses her life and the storey of her transition to India, especially Bollywood, in her documentary, Mostly Sunny.
Karenjit Kaur Vohra was born in Sarnia, Ontario, on May 13, 1981, the daughter of Punjabi parents.
Her parents immigrated to Canada from India in search of a better life for their family.
Karenjit decided to move to California, USA, when she was about 13-14 years old.
“When I first walked in there, I had no idea what Penthouse was.
I'd never seen a Penthouse publication before. In my whole life, I had never seen an adult magazine. “I was 18 and about to turn 19.”
She began her pornography career doing nude shoots and pornographic films after her "parents and one or two other people saw her naked when she was a baby."
He describes how his sister told him over the phone that her Penthouse stage name was "Sunny." His response was positive even after he realised she had used his name.
Sunny admits to taking his identity.
“I confessed to him that I had stolen his name. When my mother learned who I was, she was furious. Why did you feel compelled to use that name? “I don't know, I just selected it,” I said.
Her brother emphasises that he and his sister have a strong bond and that he fully supports everything she does. They have kept it a secret from their parents.
Sunny Leone confessed what she did after an appearance on Howard Stern's show, which was caught by a family member.
Sunny reveals scenes from a hardcore film, as well as herself as a porn star, on the show.
Within 24 hours, the entire family knew it.
As a result, her parents were eventually "shunned off," resulting in a family split.
Sunny's mother had previously struggled with alcoholism.
Sunny's mother had a full seizure in 2008. She began her rehab after being released from the hospital and stopped drinking. Her recovery, however, was short-lived.
“Again, as soon as my sister and what she does were discussed. It would begin in the same manner as before.” “I stood there and watched my mother die in front of my eyes.”
Sunny's parents' next traumatic experience was learning that her father had cancer.
