The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), the umbrella body of thefarmers protesting along the borders of the national capital over agriculturalissues, has finally agreed to end their 15-month-long protest. The farmers willvacate the Delhi borders on Saturday.
A year ago, when farmers from the agrarian states ofHaryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh reached the Delhi borders to agitate againstthe three farm laws introduced by the Centre, they did not expect to be at theprotest sites for over a year. However, their struggle has now finally paid offand they will head back to their homes on Saturday.
They occupied Singhu, Ghazipur and Tikri border for theirprotest against the three farm laws. The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), theumbrella body of farmers' unions spearheading the protests, stated that their15-month agitation will be called off on Saturday.
Last month, on the occasion of Gurupurab, Prime MinisterNarendra Modi announced that all three farm laws will be scrapped. Farmersrejoiced after listening to this news but still demanded a law for MSP.Government assured that a decision will be taken in their favour.
From December 11 farmers will start going back to theirhomes and on December 15 SKM will hold a meeting in Delhi with the centregovernment representatives.
Meanwhile, the farmers have been continuously seeking theresignation of Union Minister Ajay Mishra Teni over the Lakhimpur-Kheriincident in October this year in which 5 farmers were among the dead.
In the draft resolution sent for the second time by thegovernment, it was said that the government has agreed to cancel the FIRs againstfarmers in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, andUttarakhand with immediate effect. At the same time, there will berepresentatives of the SKM on the committee to be formed on MSP.
Also, the government will present the Electricity Bill inthe Parliament only after discussing the matter with the representatives of theSKM. Besides, the government has also given consent to the farmers oncompensation.
