Is Jon Bernthal joining Tom Holland in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’? Know Details

The Punisher’s MCU big-screen debut ignites speculations: Will he be an ally or foe, or team up with Spidey against Hulk?

Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the new installment in the Spider-Man franchise, is now in production. As announced by Director Destin Daniel Cretton at a movie theater convention, CinemaCon, the new installment of the Spider-Man franchise has begun shooting this summer and is set to release in theaters on July 31, 2026.

The fourth installment of the Marvel's Spider-Man franchise features Tom Holland in the lead role. It has been confirmed that the film will continue the story from the previous movie, Spider-Man: No Way Home. The previous film ended with a significant cliffhanger, revealing Peter Parker's superhero identity to the world. However, he requested that this revelation be erased, leaving him feeling isolated and without anyone to call family.

The announcement of the new movie has ignited a wave of happiness and excitement among the fandom. Also generating speculations about who is going to accompany Tom Holland in his big solo project. Rumors of Matt Murdock aka ‘The Daredevil’ or Wilson Fisk aka ‘The Kingpin’ from the infamous Daredevil comics being part of the film surfaced before. But it seems not to be the case.

Is The Punisher appearing in Spider-Man: Brand New Day?

While fans have been eagerly hoping for a big-screen team-up featuring Tom Holland alongside other MCU characters, Jon Bernthal was not the actor they anticipated. According to some reports, Jon Bernthal’s character, Frank Castle, also known as ‘the Punisher,’ is set to join Tom Holland in Spider-Man’s next adventure, likely as an ally working together to confront an undisclosed antagonist.

Jon Bernthal first featured in the MCU’s ‘Daredevil’ Netflix Series as Frank Castle aka The Punisher, then starred in his own series ‘The Punisher’, which ran for 2 seasons. He also recently featured in ‘Daredevil: Born Again’, reprising his role as the Punisher. And now, as confirmed by major entertainment news outlets, he is going to be seen in Spider-Man: Brand New Day as Frank Castle.

Who will be the villain? Will the film be R-rated?

Fans are excited to know more about the film, and these questions have become a hot topic among Marvel fans. Rumors are floating around about the antagonist of the film. The majority speculates that Hulk is a villain in the latest feature. The industry insiders speculate that the Hulk will ‘Hulk out’ at some point, and Spider-Man would use Frank Castle’s assistance to stop the big, mean, green machine and his rampage across New York City. Although these are mere speculations, the real story will only be revealed with the movie’s arrival.

And one of the biggest questions that concerns the level of violence, Brand New Day will contain. Bernthal’s Frank Castle has only appeared in R-rated MCU projects, which raises the possibility of the latest Spider-Man franchise’s installment being rated ‘R’. It is because an ultra-violent character, the Punisher, is featured in the film, raising the violence levels. It will be interesting to see how a character so violent will be adapted in a more family-friendly Marvel production. The film has reportedly been rated PG-13 in the US.

Tom Holland announced his new work

Tom is currently filming Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’. He recently shared a message to his fans about Spier-Man: Brand New Day. Holland said, “I am so sorry, I can’t be with you, I am halfway around the world shooting a movie.”

“I know we left you with a massive clip hanger at the end of ‘No Way Home,’ so ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is a fresh start. It is exactly that. That’s all I can say,” He added. He also promised not to give away spoilers.

This will mark Holland’s fourth solo film as Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man. Reportedly, Zendaya and Jacob Batalan, who played MJ and Ned, will also reprise their roles.
