NavjotSingh Sidhu has come under attack from the opposition parties for thecongratulations received from Pakistan on becoming the President of the PunjabCongress. The Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (PSGPC) hascongratulated Navjot Singh Sidhu on becoming the President of the StateCongress. Congratulating Sidhu through a tweet, PSGPC has also appealed thatSidhu should play an important role in the reopening of the Kartarpur Corridor.Shiromani Akali Dal and Punjab BJP have raised questions on this.
Registeringa strong objection over the tweet, BJP state president Ashwani Sharma said thatthis script of the tweet has reportedly been written by Sidhu himself. Thecorridor was constructed after the intervention of the centre government andwill open only on the decision of the centre government. “This is a matter between the two countriesand Sidhu has no role to play in this,” he added.
ShiromaniAkali Dal spokesperson and former minister Dr. Daljit Singh Cheema said thatcongratulations can be given to anyone, but PSGPC should keep in mind thatopening of Kartarpur corridor is a matter between two countries and Sidhu didnot and cannot have any role in the opening of the corridor. Shiromani AkaliDal demands early opening of the corridor from the Modi government.
Notably,in the coronation ceremony of Navjot Singh Sidhu becoming the state CongressPresident, Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh had called Pakistan a threat. The Captain had said that Pakistan shares 600 km border with Punjab and we alsohave to take extra care of the security of the country. Pakistan sometimessends weapons through drones and sometimes intoxicants.
Significantly,on the opening of the Kartarpur Corridor, Navjot Singh Sidhu had gone toPakistan on the invitation of the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan andhad given a hug to Pakistan Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa. The incidenthad attracted a lot of criticism of Sidhu in India.
