A road accident took place on the Hoshiarpur-Chandigarh highway near Mahilpur where reportedly at least 11 people have been injured after a collision between a bus and a mini-tempo, locally known as a ‘Chhota Haathi’. According to reports, all the injured were travelling in the mini-tempo and were on their way back to their native village, Chak Phulu in the Garhshankar constituency after attending a relative’s memorial service in Chabbewal.
Sources said that around 11 passengers sustained injuries in the accident and reveal that most of them are women who were seated in the rear cargo section of the mini-tempo at the time of the collision, which may have worsened the impact.
One fatality has also been reported, however, officials are yet to issue a formal confirmation regarding the death. Local residents and passers-by rushed to the spot immediately after the accident and helped in shifting the injured to nearby hospitals.
Police have reached the scene and further investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.
