Aam Aadmi Party has taken a strong lead in Gidderbaha Municipal Council elections giving a major political setback to senior Congress leader Amarinder Singh Raja Warring and according to early counting trends AAP candidates have won in 12 out of 19 wards in Gidderbaha and these results are being seen as a big achievement for the ruling party in Punjab.
Gidderbaha has been known as a strong area of influence for Raja Warring for many years and he is currently Punjab Congress president and also Member of Parliament from Ludhiana and because of his strong connection with the area the election was considered very important for Congress.
After early leads came in AAP workers celebrated the performance and said people are supporting the party’s work and development policies in Punjab and political experts believe these results could become important for future elections in the state as well as many are seeing Gidderbaha contest as a prestige battle between AAP and Congress leadership in Punjab.
However on the contrary Congress leaders said the final picture will become clear only after counting is completed in all wards and added that the party is still hopeful about final outcome.
The counting process was still going on at the time of reporting.
Across Punjab a total of 7,554 candidates are contesting in the local body elections and as per latest trends and results available AAP was leading strongly in many areas and the latest figures showed AAP ahead with 496 seats while Congress had 177 seats, BJP 41 seats, Shiromani Akali Dal 122 seats and Independents and others 181 seats.
More election results from different parts of Punjab are expected to be announced throughout the day.
