Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has registered a major victory in Dhuri Municipal Council elections with 20 out of 21 candidates winning their respective wards and Dhuri holds special political importance as it is the Assembly constituency represented by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
The results were announced on Friday as counting of votes for Punjab civic body elections continued across the state and the counting started at 8:00 AM under tight security arrangements.
Officials said only authorised persons were allowed inside the counting centres.
The strong performance of AAP in Dhuri which is is located in Sangrur district is being seen as a big political boost for Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann in his home constituency as it has remained an important political seat in Punjab politics.
Punjab civic body elections were held on May 26 for 8 Municipal Corporations, 75 Municipal Councils and 20 Nagar Panchayats across the state and according to official information more than 21 lakh voters participated in this elections.
Punjab State Election Commissioner Raj Kamal Chaudhari said that all arrangements were made to ensure free, fair and transparent counting of votes and counting supervisors and assistants were deployed after randomisation in every district with two micro observers were also appointed at each counting centre under the supervision of district observers.
Across Punjab a total of 7,554 candidates are contesting in the local body elections and as per latest trends and results available AAP was leading strongly in many areas and the latest figures showed AAP ahead with 304 seats while Congress had 93 seats, BJP 20 seats, Shiromani Akali Dal 72 seats and Independents and others 147 seats.
More election results from different parts of Punjab are expected to be announced throughout the day.
