Amid uncertainty over its registration as a political party, Akali Dal Waris Punjab De (AD-WPD) has formed a three-member coordination committee to expand its political outreach across Punjab ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
The committee will hold discussions with like-minded organisations, political parties, farmers’ and workers’ unions, and religious and community groups across the state. The aim is to assess possible political cooperation and understand the views of different groups before taking decisions on future alliances or inductions.
The three-member committee is headed by Sukhwinder Singh Agwan and includes Pargat Singh Raiya and Ranjit Singh Dhanoa.
According to the organisation, the committee has also been tasked with holding detailed discussions and conducting an evaluation before any leader from another political party or any prominent personality is considered for induction into AD-WPD.
The development comes at a time when the organisation, led by Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh, is preparing for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections while its registration as a political party remains pending.
Sources said AD-WPD is also holding talks with Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar Surjit) regarding possible seat-sharing arrangements for the 2027 Assembly elections. Details of the discussions or any final agreement have not been announced.
The organisation's political preparations were also affected recently when former Enforcement Directorate Deputy Director Niranjan Singh announced that he was severing ties with AD-WPD, only four days after joining the organisation.
Niranjan Singh announced his decision through a social media post. He said he had initially extended support to AD-WPD over issues including Punjab's drug problem, corruption, gangsters and extortion, as well as alleged involvement of police personnel in drug trafficking.
However, he said he had differences with the organisation on certain issues that he considered non-negotiable. He also stated that the conduct of people in public life should remain within the framework of the Constitution of India.
His departure came shortly after his induction into the organisation and became a setback for AD-WPD as it continues to build its political base in Punjab.
At the same time, AD-WPD is involved in a legal dispute with the Election Commission of India (ECI) over its registration as a political party. The registration process is yet to be completed and remains pending before the Delhi High Court.
The matter is scheduled to come up for hearing again in November.
Despite the pending registration, AD-WPD leaders have maintained that the organisation will contest the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. They have said that if the organisation is unable to secure registration in time, its candidates could contest the elections as Independents.
The newly formed coordination committee is expected to play a role in the organisation's preparations by engaging with political and social groups across Punjab and examining possible cooperation ahead of the elections.
For now, the organisation faces two parallel challenges: expanding its political network ahead of the 2027 polls and resolving the legal issue surrounding its registration as a political party.
