Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh is set to contest the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections from two constituencies, according to senior leader Manpreet Singh Ayali of the Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De). However, the party has not yet announced which two seats will be finalised.
Ayali said the party’s parliamentary board will take the final decision on the constituencies. One of the possibilities being discussed is Dhuri, the Assembly constituency represented by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. A direct contest between Amritpal and Mann, however, has not been finalised.
Khadoor Sahib in the Majha region is among the seats being considered for Amritpal. He currently represents the Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha constituency.
Several Malwa constituencies have also figured in discussions, including Dhuri, while Talwandi Sabo had earlier been considered as another possibility. However, the party has since announced Mandeep Singh Sidhu, brother of late actor Deep Sidhu, as its candidate from Talwandi Sabo, making Amritpal’s contest from that seat unlikely.
Party sources have also mentioned Rampura Phul as a possible option. The final two constituencies are yet to be officially announced.
The possibility of Amritpal contesting from Malwa is significant because the region has 69 of Punjab’s 117 Assembly constituencies. This makes it the largest of the state’s three major political regions in terms of Assembly seats.
Amritpal’s current electoral base is closely associated with the Majha region through his Khadoor Sahib parliamentary constituency. A Malwa contest would therefore put his party directly into another major part of Punjab’s electoral map.
Dhuri would also bring him into a direct electoral contest with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann if the party eventually chooses that seat. At present, this remains a possibility rather than a confirmed contest.
The Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De) has projected Amritpal Singh as its chief ministerial face for the 2027 Assembly elections. Manpreet Ayali said in July that Amritpal would be the party’s CM face.
The 2027 election will also be the party’s first Assembly election as a political outfit. The party has been announcing candidates in different constituencies, including Papalpreet Singh from Majitha, Satwant Singh from Bassi Pathana, Lakha Sidhana from Maur and Mandeep Singh Sidhu from Talwandi Sabo.
Amritpal is currently lodged in Assam’s Dibrugarh jail. He won the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Khadoor Sahib as an Independent candidate while he was in custody. Election Commission data records 10,49,273 votes polled in the constituency, with Amritpal winning the seat by a substantial margin.
His 2024 victory gave him a parliamentary base before the formation and expansion of his political outfit for the 2027 Assembly polls.
For the upcoming election, the party is seeking to build a broader political presence beyond Majha, while focusing on issues it describes as Panthic and on wider concerns of Punjabis. The exact two Assembly constituencies from which Amritpal will contest remain pending a formal decision by the party.
