Punjab could experience a wetter start to May 2026 as per the latest forecast by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) as the weather office has predicted that rainfall across India this month may cross 110% of the Long Period Average (LPA) indicating more rain than usual during the early summer period.
For reference the average rainfall for May based on data from 1971 to 2020 is 64.1 mm however this year’s higher-than-normal projection suggests that parts of northwest India including Punjab are likely to receive normal to above-normal rainfall.
For residents of Punjab this could bring some relief from rising temperatures and increased rainfall during May might help in:
Lowering day temperatures
Improving soil moisture
Supporting early agricultural activities
However the forecast also points out that rainfall may not be evenly distributed across the country and while Punjab falls in the region expected to get decent rainfall local variations are still possible.

Lightning
Gusty winds
These conditions are expected between May 3 and May 6 as part of typical pre-monsoon weather activity.
