Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s recent remark about former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has triggered political discussion in Punjab, especially over whether the relationship between the two leaders could be showing signs of improvement.
During an Instagram “Ask Me Anything” session with students, Rahul Gandhi was asked about his favourite BJP leader and his answer surprised many because he named Amarinder Singh, a former Congress veteran who is now associated with the BJP.
Rahul Gandhi said that he gets along well with Amarinder Singh. He also described the former Punjab Chief Minister as “cool” and praised his knowledge of military history, Rahul ended his response with a light-hearted greeting: “Hello, Uncle Amarinder!”
The comment has drawn attention because Amarinder Singh was once one of the Congress party’s most important leaders in Punjab, but his political journey, however, changed significantly after he stepped down as Chief Minister in September 2021 and subsequently left Congress.
The latest exchange has now raised a question in political circles: Could the warm public remarks between Rahul Gandhi and Amarinder Singh be a sign of changing equations, or is it simply a personal relationship between two politicians who have known each other for years?
There is currently no statement indicating that Amarinder Singh is planning to leave the BJP or return to Congress and Rahul Gandhi’s comment itself also did not mention any political return, alliance or change in Amarinder Singh’s political position.
Rahul Gandhi’s answer came during an interactive social media session aimed at connecting with students and younger audiences and instead of giving a conventional political answer, Rahul spoke about his personal equation with Amarinder Singh, he said he gets along well with him and praised his understanding of military history.
The response was notable because Amarinder Singh is currently on the opposite side of the political divide from Rahul Gandhi. Amarinder left Congress after a long political career in the party and later joined the BJP and Rahul’s use of the phrase “Hello, Uncle Amarinder!” also gave the exchange a personal and informal tone and the comment quickly attracted attention because of Amarinder Singh’s long association with the Congress and his history with the Gandhi family and the party leadership.
Captain Amarinder Singh served as Punjab Chief Minister twice under the Congress and his first term lasted from February 26, 2002, to March 1, 2007, he returned as Chief Minister after the Congress won the Punjab Assembly elections in 2017 and his second term began on March 16, 2017, and ended on September 20, 2021.
Following this Amarinder Singh stepped down as Chief Minister in September 2021 amid an internal power struggle within the Punjab Congress and after his resignation, the Congress appointed Charanjit Singh Channi as the new Chief Minister of Punjab.
The change in leadership was followed by Amarinder Singh’s exit from the Congress and he subsequently formed his own political outfit, the Punjab Lok Congress and in 2022, the Punjab Lok Congress merged with the BJP, bringing Amarinder Singh into the BJP camp.
The latest Rahul Gandhi remark is also significant because it follows comments made by Amarinder Singh himself about his relationship with Rahul. Earlier this year, Amarinder Singh spoke positively about Rahul Gandhi and revealed that the Congress leader had personally wished him on his birthday and Amarinder Singh also said Rahul had sent him a condolence message following the death of his brother, Raja Randhir Singh, also, in an interview, Amarinder Singh said that Rahul Gandhi personally extended birthday greetings to him and later sent a message after his brother’s death. He also pointed out that, according to him, no senior BJP leader had sent a message expressing sympathy after the bereavement and these comments showed that despite the political differences between the two leaders, communication between them had continued.
The political significance of Rahul Gandhi’s comment comes from Amarinder Singh’s position in Punjab politics, as for years, Amarinder was one of the Congress party’s strongest leaders in the state, he served as Chief Minister twice and remained a major political figure in Punjab even after leaving the post and his departure from Congress was also an important development in the run-up to the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections, since then, Amarinder Singh has been associated with the BJP. His wife, Preneet Kaur, is also a BJP leader and has been a prominent political figure in Punjab.
Because of this history, Rahul Gandhi publicly describing Amarinder Singh as his favourite BJP leader has naturally attracted political attention, however, the remark by itself does not establish any change in Amarinder Singh’s political position.
