Panjab University, Chandigarh has scored a major academic milestone with 48 of its faculty members securing a place in the global list of the world’s top 2% scientists, compiled by Stanford University in collaboration with Elsevier. The recognition celebrates both recent research impact and sustained scholarly contributions over the years.
Of the 48 achievers, 30 earned distinction for their career-long influence, while others were acknowledged for outstanding research carried out in 2024. The database, regarded as one of the most authoritative measures of scientific excellence, evaluates scholars through a comprehensive analysis of citations, authorship and research impact.
The list spans nearly every major faculty at PU. Scholars from pharmaceutical sciences, chemistry, physics, environmental studies, botany, biotechnology, microbiology, forensic science, and engineering institutes such as UIET and UICET have all made the cut—reflecting the university’s strength in multidisciplinary research.
Educationists across Punjab and Chandigarh hailed the achievement, noting that it underscores PU’s growing presence on the global research stage. “Having 48 of the faculty members ranked among the world’s leading scientists is a matter of immense pride for India. It highlights the university’s deep commitment to innovation, research quality and academic leadership,” they said.
The recognised names include several leading researchers—among them Kewal Krishan, Santosh Kumar Upadhyay, Harsh Nayyar, Gargi Ghoshal, Sushil Kumar Kansal, Bhupinder Singh Bhoop, and Suman Mor—who have consistently advanced knowledge in their respective fields and brought international attention to the university.
The achievement comes at a time when Panjab University is actively expanding its research collaborations and strengthening its academic ecosystem. Experts say such global recognition not only enhances institutional reputation but also motivates students and early-career researchers to pursue high-impact scientific work.
