In a significant move to address the long-pending problem of non-functional street lights, the Municipal Corporation Jalandhar is all set to launch a special mobile application on the 25th of this month (February 25, 2026) in association with the HPL company.
Talking exclusively with True Scoop, Mayor Vaneet Dhir revealed that Jalandhar has almost 1.10 lakh street lights installed in the city, and the number is increasing every day. Of these, almost 74,000 street lights were being maintained by the HPL company in a previous agreement. However, the remaining 30,000 to 35,000 street lights had no proper maintenance system in place.
This resulted in a situation where, when complaints were received about non-functional street lights, the HPL company refused to take any action regarding the non-HPL street lights. The Mayor highlights that this situation has been prevailing for almost a decade, where a significant percent of the street lights in the city remained non-functional at times creating dark spots.
To tackle this problem, the Municipal Corporation has now entered into a new agreement with HPL. As per the new arrangement, the citizens will be able to click a picture of the non-functional street light through the soon-to-be-launched app and upload it directly. The company will be responsible to make it functional within 48 hours, or else a penalty will be imposed on them. The new agreement is aimed to bring all street light maintenance under one umbrella.
It is anticipated that the app will not only bring uniformity but will also empower the citizens by giving them a proper platform to lodge their complaints, thus making the street lighting system of the city more efficient.
