Tsunami panic hits US coast after Russia quake – Warnings issued in multiple regions—Details inside

Tsunami Warnings are sounded in Russia, Japan, Hawaii, Alaska, California and evacuations are already underway in Japan, Hawaii, and along parts of the US West Coast.

Russia, Japan, Hawaii, Alaska Tsunami Warnings Live Updates: Tsunami warnings and advisories have been sounded around the Pacific, from British Columbia to Hawaii and Japan, after the 8.8 magnitude earthquake that struck near Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula east coast Tuesday. Japan, Hawaii, and some of the US West Coast areas are undergoing evacuations. 3-4 metre waves have been reported in Kamchatka, while smaller waves of around 30 cm have extended to Hokkaido in northern Japan. In Hawaii, Governor Josh Green has appealed to the people to heed the evacuation notice and remain calm, with US President Donald Trump requesting Americans to remain vigilant.

It is reported that a number of individuals in Kamchatka were hurt and immediate strong aftershocks are still anticipated. Tsunami alerts have also been put up in portions of China, Philippines, Indonesia, Guam, Peru, and Ecuador's Galapagos Islands.

Epicentre of earthquake in Russia

According to the US Geological Survey, the quake happened roughly 85 miles off the coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula and close to 12 miles deep. The region is an isolated area in Russia which is less populated.

A tsunami warning is still in place about the earthquake located around Kamchatka Peninsula. The government is united as one to evaluate the situation, issue evacuation instructions, and perform other appropriate measures. People living in areas subject to evacuation orders should still seek shelter in safe places," the Office of the Japanese Prime Minister posted on X.

Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba also urged "thorough measures" at evacuation sites to avert heatstroke amid the extremely hot weather situation.

Tsunami warnings made in Japan

Tsunami warnings have also been made in Japan's coastal regions stretching from Hokkaido to Kyushu. Japan's weather agency reported waves of up to 3 meters high could strike three locations, including Hokkaido by 10:00 a.m. local time and extend to other parts of eastern and southern Japan later in the day. Japan Meteorological Agency has indicated that the tsunamis "will strike repeatedly." Individuals are advised to avoid beaches and riverside areas and not approach the coast to view the waves.
