In a concerning development, Russia's Kamchatka Coast on Wednesday was hit by a massive 8.7 magnitude earthquake. Yes! you read it right. The magnitude that hit Russia was 8.7 to 8.8 on the Richter scale. The seriousness of the issue can be understood by the fact that Tsunami warnings have already been issued.
In the small coastal town of Severo-Kurilsk, located south of Kamchatka, an evacuation order was issued due to the threat of tsunami waves. Residents were told to move to higher ground and stay away from the shore.
As per reports, the earthquake in Russia's Kamchatka Coast has triggered a tsunami warning from America to Japan.
US President Donald Trump took to his X handle and wrote, "Due to a massive earthquake that occurred in the Pacific Ocean, a Tsunami Warning is in effect for those living in Hawaii. A Tsunami Watch is in effect for Alaska and the Pacific Coast of the United States. Japan is also in the way. Please visit https://tsunami.gov for the latest information. STAY STRONG AND STAY SAFE!"
Notably, there are multiple US-Russia nuclear bases in Alaska and Kamchatka Peninsula. The Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan has been evacuated. If a tsunami strikes Japan, then obviously its effect will be felt in India's Andaman-Nicobar Islands as well.
