Against the Novel Coronavirus, the Indian government will launch mass vaccinations from January 16. The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi reviewed the nation’s situation in a meeting after which this decision was announced. 

Priority will be given to healthcare and frontline workers. 

A government statement said, "After the detailed review, it was decided that in view of the forthcoming festivals including Lohri, Makar Sankranti, Pongal, Magh Bihu, etc, the COVID-19 vaccination will start from January 16, 2021." 

Next in hierarchy of vaccination will be individuals above 50 years of age. Those under 50 years of age will be considered who have co-morbidities. 

The government statement continued, "Emergency Use Authorisation or Accelerated Approval has been granted by the National Regulator for two vaccines (Covishield and Covaxin) which have established safety and immunogenicity."

A 45-year-old man died in a mask-making factory in Delhi early Saturday while two others remained injured, police said.

"The Fire Department received a call at around 3.54 a.m. Immediately six fire tenders were rushed to the spot," said Atul Garg, director of the Delhi Fire Service.

The machines and raw materials on the third floor in mask manufacturing factory had caught fire. Three persons rescued by the DFS staff were rushed to the hospital, where Jugal Kishore succumbed.

More than 1.89 lakh trees have been felled for the construction of the Bundelkhand expressway, according to an RTI response. The trees were cut in Banda, Chitrakoot, Mahoba, Hamirpur, Jalaun, Aurraiya and Etawah, it said.

The 296-km long four-lane road will connect Etawah to Chitrakoot and Uttar Pradesh districts to the National Capital Region via the Yamuna expressway.

In a reply to a query by Banda-based activist Kuldeep Shukla, senior manager of the state Forest Department, Atul Asthana, said that the UP Expressway Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) has cut 1,89,036 trees for the project.

The UPEIDA has planned to plant over 2.70 lakh saplings along the expressway, the RTI added.

Banda Divisional Forest Officer Sanjay Agarwal said the trees were cut after permission from the Centre.

The expressway will ensure better connectivity of the Bundelkhand area with the national capital region (NCR).

Five people were burnt alive on Tuesday morning after a container truck hit a car on the Yamuna Expressway.

According to information, the container truck was coming from the wrong direction.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed grief over the incident and has directed district officials to take necessary action and provide help to the victims' kin.

Though the deceased have not yet been identified, police sources said that the car was registered in the name of one Raj Kumar of Lucknow and the deceased belonged to Unnao.

Seven people, including a highway police chief, were killed in two improvised bomb blasts in Afghanistan on Monday, according to authorities.

In Parwan province, five police officers, including provincial highway police chief Wali Mohammad, were killed in Charikar city after their vehicle hit an IED, a senior police official told Xinhua news agency.

In Badghis province, two civilians were killed and another wounded after a cargo truck was torn apart also by an IED in Muqur district

The police officials accused the Taliban militant group for planting the roadside bombs.

Monday's development comes after the Interior Ministry on Sunday claimed that 28 civilians were killed and 47 others injured in blasts across the country in the last three days.

Canada is set to halt the entry of passenger flights from the UK for 72 hours amid fears over a highly infectious new mutant strain of the novel coronavirus which has been discovered in Britain, authorities announced.

"Given the high number of cases of a variant Covid-19 virus observed in some areas in the UK, the decision has been made to suspend entry into Canada of all commercial and private passenger flights from the UK for 72 hours," Xinhua news agency quoted a statement from Canadian health authorities as saying on Saunday.

The temporary ban came into immediate effect on Sunday.

Canada became the latest nation to take action against the spread of the mutant strain of coronavirus after several countries, including France, Germany, Italy, Belgium and Saudi Arabia, announced restrictions on passenger planes to and from from the UK.

On December 19, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson had announced that the newly identified strain of the virus may be up to 70 per cent more transmissible.

In a series of frequently asked questions (FAQs) for its trials, Bharat Biotech said BBV-152 is a whole-virion inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine. Amongst all the vaccine platforms such as an mRNA-based vaccine, DNA-based vaccine, vector-based vaccine, or live attenuated vaccines, etc., the inactivated vaccines are safest, and hence, the adverse reactions are lesser.

It said about 755 participants have been vaccinated in phase 1 & 2 clinical trials. No serious adverse events have been reported to be related to the vaccine in phase 1 and 2 clinical trials.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday said that the national capital has fought a war against Covid-19 pandemic and the third wave has now been brought under control.

Noting that the patients were lying on the streets and corridors of hospitals when New York had reached its Covid-19 peak, Kejriwal said: "It was not the case in Delhi as 7,000 beds were lying vacant when the highest single-day spikes were reported."

With reports of 1,133 present Covid cases in Delhi, the CM said that the positivity rate has now dropped to 1.3 per cent compared to November when the figure was 15 per cent.

Two Iraqi citizens were allegedly duped of Rs 9,93,695.85 and Rs 1,80,447.66 by miscreants posing as cops, Gurugram police said on Saturday.

According to the police, a complaint in the matter was filed by Abduj Jabbar, who is a translator for Iraqi nationals.

In the complaint, Jabbar said one Iraqi national Mehandi Hasan had came to Gurugram a few days ago with his 49-year-old relative Ahemad Jakki for medical treatment in a leading private hospital in Gurugram.

Spanish Health Minister Salvador Ilia has confirmed that the country will begin a vaccination programe against the novel coronavirus from December 27 onwards.

The programe will first administer the Biotech Pfizer vaccine, which will begin arriving in the country on December 26, reports Xinhua news agency.

"If Europe has agreed that vaccination begins in a coordinated manner, in Spain we are going to start the first possible day," Illa said at a press conference on Friday.

At minus 6.6 degrees Celsius on Saturday, Srinagar recorded the coldest night of the season so far, while the temperature in Ladakh's Drass town to minus 29.

"Srinagar recorded minus 6.6 as the minimum temperature today which is the coldest recorded so far this season. This record was surpassed during the last 10 years on December 25, 2018 when the minimum had dropped to minus 7.7 in Srinagar," an official of the MET Department said.

"Drass town recorded minus 29 as the minimum temperature which is the lowest recorded today in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh," the official added.

Gulmarg recorded minus 9.2 and Pahalgam minus 9.5 as the night's lowest temperatures.

Leh town recorded minus 18.3 and Kargil minus 21.1 as the minimum temperatures.

Jammu city recorded 3.3, Katra 4.9, Batote 2.5, Bannihal 3.2 and Bhaderwah minus 3.0 as the minimum temperatures.

Goa's tourism industry may have suffered a loss of between Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 7,200 crore and job losses in the range of 35 per cent to 58 per cent on account of the Covid-19 pandemic, an official report said.

The report 'Coping with COVID-19: Survival and Revival of Goa's Tourism Industry' compiled by the Goa Tourism Ministry and consultancy firm KPMG Advisory Services Pvt. Ltd, also said that the state tourism industry directly contributes 16.43 per cent revenue towards the state Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and approximately 35 per cent of state's population is directly employed by the tourism sector.

Despite bone chilling cold wave surging through Jammu and Kashmir, the eighth and last phase of the District Development Council (DDC) elections on Saturday recorded a voter turnout of 8.93 per cent across several districts in the first two hours.

Since polling began at 7 a.m., officials said Anantnag has recorded the lowest turnout in Kashmir division while Samba in Jammu saw highest amount of polling.

As per the figures given by the office of State Election Commissioner, in Kashmir Division, Pulwama has recorded voting percentage of 1.38, Baramulla 8.62 per cent, Kulgam 1.36 per cent, Shopian 1.03 per cent, Anantnag 0.62 per cent, Bandipora 12.94 per cent, Kupwara 11.52 per cent and Budgam 6.55 per cent till 9 am.

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said that he was ready to talk with US President-elect Joe Biden, who will be inaugurated on January 20, 2021, "on any subject".

The number of initial unemployment claims in the US increased to 885,000 last week, three-month high, as surging Covid-19 cases weigh on economic recovery, the Labour Department reported.

In the week ending December 12, the number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits increased by 23,000 from the previous week's upwardly revised level of 862,000, Xinhua news agency quoted a report issued by the Department's Bureau of Labour Statistics (BLS) as saying.

At least five people died after a massive winter storm hit the US Northeast this week, the Weather Channel reported.

In New York State, two deaths connected to the storm were reported, Xinhua news agency quoted Governor Andrew Cuomo as saying on Thursday.

Shocking photos showed at least 66 vehicles, including 11 passenger ones, were involved in a pileup on Interstate 80 in Clinton County, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday.One person was killed and several others were injured in the pileup, according to state police.

The interstate remained closed on Thursday as troopers and tow trucks worked to remove the vehicles.

A 63-year-old man walking with a snow blower was hit and killed on Wednesday by a plow truck in North Versailles, Pennsylvania, KDKA-TV reported.

The Supreme Court on Friday asked the government to devise a mechanism to give rotational breaks to doctors and healthcare personnel, who have been working continuously since April.

A bench headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, to look into the matter as doctors and health care personnel are at the forefront of fighting Covid-19 pandemic. Mehta said the Centre will take a decision on this issue within two days.

Earlier, the top court had emphasized that it is essential to give a break to doctors and health care personnel who are involved in fighting the pandemic.

The Met has forecast thunderstorms with lightning in parts of south coastal Andhra Pradesh on Thursday.

The national capital saw a massive dip in the mercury on Monday and if the weatherman is right it may plummet further by Thursday-Friday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 8.4 degrees Celsius, down from 11.4 on Sunday and 14.4 on Saturday. "The temperature has dropped by six notches as compared to Saturday," head of the IMD's regional forecasting centre, Kuldeep Srivastava told.

Mumbai police on Sunday, arrested Vikas Khanchandani, Republic TV CEO, in connection with the fake tv rating scam. By far 12 arrests have been made in the case. 

The arrest of Vikas Khanchandani came less than a week after the apex court had rejected an appeal from ARG Outlier Media Private Limited, which owns the Republic Media network, seeking protection for the group and its employees.

"This petition is ambitious. You want Maharashtra police not to arrest any employee and transfer the cases to CBI. You better withdraw this," Justice DY Chandrachud had told the Group, which had alleged the Maharashtra Police of harassing the media company, its employees and its Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami.
