Today's a special day—Google's 27! Who'd believe it? What began as a tiny project hardly bigger than an idea in a dorm room now stands as the firm many of us use every single day.

Want to search for answers, view a video, email someone, or get directions? Google's where the majority of us go first. But have you ever taken a moment to think about how "Google" was named?

It's really a rather silly tale. The original name of google was named after a mathematical concept, "Googol," referring to the number 1 followed by 100 zeros.

The founders of Google are Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the two bright fellows who made the global giant. These two founders were looking for a name that would capture just how enormous the universe of information they're attempting to catalog.

Since that humble beginning in 1998, Google has not only remained a search engine, it's become much, much larger. Now Google operates Gmail, YouTube, Google Maps, Android phones, and is leading in new technologies such as artificial intelligence.

Although the company was actually founded early in September, Google wishes to celebrate its birthday on the 27th annually to celebrate milestones.
