Taking a significant step to strengthen Punjab’s dairy sector, Animal Husbandry, Fisheries and Dairy Development Minister S. Gurmeet Singh Khudian on Monday evening launched the “Block Level Milking Competition – 2025-26” from the dairy farm of Pardeep Singh at Village Sohana, Mohali.
Addressing a gathering of progressive dairy farmers, the Minister announced that these competitions will be held on the second Monday of every month across all 154 blocks of the state. The initiative is designed to provide farmers with a platform to showcase high-yielding livestock and adopt modern animal husbandry practices.
Elaborating on the eligibility criteria, Khudian said the competitions are open to various livestock categories: Murrah and Murrah Graded Breed buffaloes must produce 16 kg or above milk, Nili Ravi and Nili Ravi Graded Breed buffaloes 14 kg or above, Sahiwal and other indigenous breed cows 12 kg or above, HF and HF cross cows 30 kg or above, Jersey and Jersey cross cows 16 kg or above, while goats of any breed should produce at least 2.5 kg milk.
Highlighting the broader objectives, the Minister said, “Our farmers are the backbone of Punjab’s economy, and the dairy sector holds immense potential to strengthen rural livelihoods. These competitions are not merely about prizes—they aim to identify, reward, and replicate best practices in livestock management. By encouraging high-yielding breeds and efficient management, we aim to increase farmers’ income and promote a sustainable dairy ecosystem in Punjab.”
He added that the programme aligns with Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s vision to empower farmers, promote allied agricultural activities, and ensure sustainable economic growth. The competitions are expected to foster a spirit of healthy competition among dairy farmers, leading to qualitative improvements in livestock productivity across the state.
Senior officers of the Animal Husbandry Department and a large number of dairy farmers were present at the launch event, expressing enthusiasm about the initiative and its potential to enhance both production and profitability in the dairy sector.
