Professor Vaishali Gupta from the Advanced Eye Centre at PGIMER Chandigarh has been selected for the prestigious Gold Medal of the International Uveitis Study Group (IUSG), making her the first Indian doctor educated and practicing in the country to receive the honour.
The IUSG Gold Medal, awarded once every four years, is considered the highest global recognition in the field of uveitis care and research.
The group, comprising around 150 leading ophthalmologists worldwide, selects the recipient through a rigorous two-stage voting process. Only one expert is honoured in each cycle.
Prof Gupta will receive the medal at the IUSG meeting scheduled to be held in Tubingen, Germany, in July 2026, where she will also deliver the Gold Medal Lecture.
The award acknowledges her extensive contributions to the diagnosis, treatment and research of uveitis, a complex inflammatory eye disease that can cause severe vision loss.
She described the recognition as a milestone not only for herself but for Indian medical research.
Prof Gupta said her mentor, Professor Amod Gupta, had consistently encouraged her pursuit of excellence, while PGIMER provided the platform to carry her work to the global stage.
