Punjabi singer and global icon Diljit Dosanjh has once again found himself at the centre of a public debate after extending support to students protesting in Delhi. Known for his strong connection with the Punjabi community and youth across the world, Diljit has often used his platform to comment on social issues. His latest remarks have brought back memories of the criticism he faced during the farmers’ protest, when he was targeted by some sections of society and labelled “anti-national” for his support.

Addressing the ongoing student protest, Diljit emphasized that students deserve to be heard and that their concerns should be addressed through a fair and respectful approach. He highlighted the importance of dialogue, saying that young voices raising questions about their future should not be ignored.

Recalling his stance during the farmers’ protest, he said that he was labelled “anti-national” for expressing support for farmers’ concerns. During the 2020–21 farmers’ protest against the now-repealed farm laws, Diljit openly expressed solidarity with protesting farmers. He visited protest sites at the Delhi borders, extended support to farmers braving harsh conditions, and spoke about their concerns on social media. His actions received appreciation from many who saw his support as standing up for farmers’ rights. However, he also faced criticism from some people who accused him of supporting a movement that they viewed as politically motivated. Some critics questioned his intentions and used terms like “anti-national” against him.
Diljit, however, maintained that supporting citizens raising their concerns does not mean opposing the country. He argued that farmers and ordinary people have the right to express their issues and that their voices deserve to be heard.
Maybe labelled anti-nationalist again
Now, while supporting the Delhi student protest, Diljit has pointed out that he may face similar accusations again. He said that students should be listened to, treated fairly, and given a platform for dialogue instead of being dismissed or criticised for raising questions.
His statement has once again highlighted the debate around the role of celebrities in social movements. Supporters believe artists with large audiences can help bring attention to important issues, while critics argue that public figures should be cautious when commenting on complex matters.
