
As per police sources, the accused was identified as 41-year-old Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakariya, who hails from Rajkot in Gujarat. The accused is said to have approached the Chief Minister when she was engaging with citizens and suddenly became aggressive.
Eyewitnesses and preliminary reports indicate that the man initially attempted to pass on some documents to the Chief Minister, purportedly pertaining to a court case. However, within seconds, he shouted at her, slapped her, and even pulled at her hair before throwing something heavy. The CM lost her balance and fell to the ground amidst the commotion.
Delhi Police officials who were at the scene immediately overpowered the assailant and arrested him. He is currently under interrogation to determine the motive for the attack.
We have reached out to our Gujarat counterparts for information on the accused. There has also been an internal inquiry ordered to ascertain how such a slip occurred even with security measures at the CM's house," said a senior police officer to reporters.
After the incident, CM Gupta was treated by doctors. Sources explained that she is under medical observation now and information on her injuries is expected.
This attack has also raised serious concerns regarding the security deployment at public events held at the Chief Minister's residence, as top police authorities, such as the Commissioner and the DCP, were present in Civil Lines at the time of the incident.
Security at the CM's residence has now been enhanced, and further investigation is in progress.
