A 32-year-old man, Jerdaine Foster, has been arrested in Canada for the fatal shooting of Indian medical student Harsimrat Randhawa.
Foster was apprehended in Niagara Falls, Ontario, on Tuesday and charged with first-degree murder and three counts of attempted murder, as reported by BarrieToday.com.
On Thursday, Det. Sgt. Daryl Reid provided an update to the media, revealing that the incident involved at least seven people, four cars, and multiple guns. The shooting occurred in the area of Upper James Street and South Bend Road, where bullets reportedly struck the window of a nearby home, though no one inside sustained injuries.
Due to the case’s current status in court, Reid stated that he could not provide further details.
Foster has connections to the Halton, Hamilton, and Niagara regions and resided in short-term rental properties, as per the official statement.
An investigation is ongoing to apprehend all individuals involved in the tragic incident that resulted in Randhawa’s death.
Police believe that the violent confrontation began several minutes before the fatal shooting at the bus stop.
On April 17, Harsimrat Randhawa, a 21-year-old student at Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario, was waiting for the bus when she was struck by a stray bullet.
Tragically, Randhawa succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. When Hamilton Police arrived at the crime scene, they found her with a gunshot wound to the chest. Despite immediate medical attention, she succumbed to her injuries.
Local police have confirmed that Randhawa was an innocent victim, fatally struck by a stray bullet during a shooting incident involving two vehicles.
A homicide investigation is currently underway to determine the circumstances leading up to Randhawa’s death.
Harsimrat, who had a younger brother, had travelled to Canada two years ago for medical studies.
Her cousin, Balraj Singh, shared with the Canadian Press in April that Harsimrat had aspirations of opening her physiotherapy clinic after graduating from Mohawk College.
