Suvendu Adhikari a top leader from BJP has been chosen as leader of BJP legislature party in West Bengal paving way for him to become first BJP Chief Minister of the State while such an announcement represents a big political change for West Bengal which is witnessing its first ever BJP government following a massive win in the 2026 Assembly polls.

This particular announcement came on behalf of Union Home Minister Amit Shah at a press conference that took place after BJP legislature party meeting held in Kolkata wherein BJP MLAs and senior BJP leaders attended the event and as per sources the name of Suvendu Adhikari was proposed during the meeting and he was well supported by legislators from his party and immediately after this news Amit Shah congratulated him calling him next Bengal Chief Minister.

Swearing-in ceremony on May 9

The swearing-in ceremony of the new BJP government is scheduled to take place on May 9 at Brigade Parade Ground a venue known for hosting large political events and rallies in Kolkata and it is important to note that West Bengal is currently witnessing a historic political transition as this will be the first time the BJP forms a government in the state and the party managed to cross the majority mark in the Assembly elections ending years of rule by the Trinamool Congress (TMC).

Shah thanks West Bengal

Speaking at the meeting Amit Shah thanked the people of West Bengal for placing their trust in the BJP despite what he described as a difficult political atmosphere in the state and claimed that fear and political violence had become common in Bengal politics over the years “I want to express my gratitude to the people of Bengal and the atmosphere that had been created here since the Communist era was further intensified into fear under Mamata ji’s rule and in such conditions expressing one’s vote had become almost impossible” Shah said.

He further stated that despite “hundreds of instances of violence and brutality” the people voted in favour of the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and also said that the BJP would work hard to live up to the expectations of the people of West Bengal “The expectations that the people of Bengal have placed in us based on which they have given us this mandate we will do our best to uphold that trust to the fullest” he said.

Shah takes a jibe at TMC

During his speech Amit Shah also took a direct political jab at the ruling TMC leadership saying that many incidents of violence and threats took place during the Assembly elections and said that despite these challenges the people of Bengal continued to support the BJP “There have been many incidents of violence and threats but people have put their faith in BJP in Bengal polls” Shah told party workers and legislators.

Adhikari’s rise to the top

Suvendu Adhikari’s rise to the top post is being seen as a significant moment in Bengal politics and a key face of the BJP in West Bengal Adhikari played an important role in strengthening party’s presence in state over the past few years and his appointment as legislature party leader now formally positions him to take oath as Chief Minister.
