Discussions about a possible leadership reshuffle in Punjab Congress have once again gained momentum and according to party insiders and political sources Congress high command is considering changes in party's state leadership as it prepares for 2027 Punjab Assembly elections however no official decision has been announced by party so far.

Three important party positions

Sources say Congress is discussing changes in three important positions in Punjab which include the post of Punjab Congress president, Leader of Opposition (LoP) and Working President of the state and the reported plan is aimed at giving representation to different communities and presenting a balanced leadership team before Assembly elections.

Channi’s name in the fray

According to party insiders former Chief Minister and Jalandhar MP Charanjit Singh Channi is being considered for post of Punjab Congress president, Channi is one of the party's biggest Dalit faces in Punjab and is believed to have support of Congress high command.

Congress’ balancing act

At the same time, sources claim that the party may also give important responsibilities to leaders from Jat Sikh, Hindu and Dalit communities and the idea is to create a leadership team that represents Punjab's major social groups.

Other names on the list

According to discussions former Punjab minister Vijay Inder Singla is being considered for post of Working President while Jalandhar Cantt MLA Pargat Singh may be given responsibility of Leader of Opposition in Punjab Assembly however, these discussions are still at the internal level and Congress has not confirmed any of these possible appointments.

Changes could upset some Congress leaders

Sources also say that the leadership is moving carefully because any major change could upset some senior leaders and there are concerns within the party that if certain leaders are ignored, they may become unhappy and some could even decide to leave the party. Because of this Congress leadership has not taken a final decision yet.

Recent move by BJP

The discussion over a possible reshuffle has become stronger after BJP recently appointed Kewal Singh Dhillon a former Barnala MLA and Jat Sikh leader as new president of its Punjab unit and political observers believe BJP's move is part of its strategy to strengthen its position before 2027 Assembly elections and this has led to fresh debate over whether Congress will also change its leadership to improve its political position in the state.

Current Congress leadership

At present Amarinder Singh Raja Warring continues to serve as Punjab Congress president and senior Congress leaders have repeatedly said that there is no decision to replace him however political discussions and reports about possible organisational changes continue to surface and Congress continues to be one of Punjab's major political parties but many political observers believe it has struggled to emerge as a strong opposition despite having experienced leaders and a large support base.

Internal indifferences of Congress

One of the biggest reasons often mentioned is internal differences within the party and different groups led by leaders such as Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Charanjit Singh Channi, Pratap Singh Bajwa and others have often been seen working separately and these internal differences have regularly made headlines and have affected the party's public image.

Congress losing its footing

Congress has also faced disappointing results in several municipal and civic body elections and while the party continues to have support in many parts of Punjab it has not been able to convert that support into a statewide political wave and political observers also believe that Congress needs to strengthen its organisation and build stronger public campaigns on issues affecting the people while critics say the party has not consistently projected itself as a strong alternative to ruling government.

No official conformation yet

Apart from Channi, Pargat Singh and Vijay Inder Singla, several other senior leaders continue to be discussed for larger roles in the future which include current Leader of Opposition Pratap Singh Bajwa, Rana Gurjeet Singh, Bharat Bhushan Ashu and Fatehgarh Sahib MP Amar Singh while Raja Warring also remains in contention to continue leading Punjab Congress but for now all discussions remain unofficial.
