O/o District Public Relations Officer, Jalandhar, January 7-Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Rana Gurmeet Singh Sodhi today said that as many as 15 revamping projects, three new athletic tracks, and Astroturf in four cities to be launched to boost the sports infrastructure in the state. 

Presiding over a function at Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium to mark the 37th death anniversary of Olympian Surjit Singh, the Sports Minister said that the department has floated tenders to lay new Astroturf in Jalandhar, Gurdaspur, Ferozepur, and Dhudike, which were set to open on January 16, 2021. The project was expected to be completed within six months adding the sports minister said that besides laying off new Astroturf, another project to revamp the sports infrastructure at the hockey stadium and renovation of the hostel would also begin here. 

He said that once the project would be completed, a national-level hockey championship to be hosted in Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium adding as many as 15 revamping projects to be started in Jalandhar that also include Jalandhar city.

The sports minister further said that three athletic tracks in Jalandhar, Guruhar Sahai, and Gurdaspur to be established to ensure quality training to the budding players. He said that 15 various projects to revamp the sports infrastructure in the state were already underway, and soon the technical teams of the department would visit Jalandhar to initiate this ambitious project.

Meanwhile, he distributed the sports kits to over 200 budding players on the occasion of the culmination of a 100-days long hockey coaching camp organized by the Olympian Surjit Hockey Society. He also felicitated the six coaches who imparted the training to the participants of coaching classes. He exhorted budding players to be focused, dedicated, and concentrated towards their goals besides adopting disciplined behavior in their lives.  Further, he lauded the efforts of society to promote the game and bring up new talent. Earlier, he paid a floral tribute to the Olympian Surjit Singh and recalled the time spent with him as a player. 

Prominent amongst others present on the occasion included Additional Deputy Commissioner Vishesh Sarangal, DSO Jasmit Kaur, Secretary Iqbal Singh Sandhu, Surinder Bhapa, Baljeet Dhillon, Harpreet Mander, and Swimming Coach Umesh Sharma.
