Britney Spears is free. A Los Angelesjudge Friday terminated the controversial guardianship that has controlled popstar Britney Spears' life for the past 13 years.
"Best day ever... praise the Lord... canI get an Amen," wrote Spears on Instagram, using the hashtag"#FreedBritney."
A Los Angeles Judge, Brenda Penny said, “Effectivetoday, the conservatorship of the person and the estate of Britney Jean Spearsis hereby terminated."
This conservatorship has made Britney Spearsto go through a lot in her life for more than a decade. She was unable to havecontrol over her $60 million estate and from making decisions abouther life.
Her father Jamie said that thisconservatorship was necessary for Britney. Her lawyers said, "Her life wasin shambles and she was in physical, emotional, mental and financial distress.”
Over all this time, she has had no power overthe wealth that she has generated, or over general decisions regarding what sheshould or should not do. In 2019, she announced that she would not performuntil her father was removed as her conservator.
Britney’s fans started the #FreeBritneymovement to put pressure on the authorities to end her conservatorship. Therewas widespread dismay over the fact that a high-functioning individual had beenlegally deemed to be incapable of making her own decisions.
Fans outside the courthouse who had beencampaigning for the conservatorship to end for years could hardly contain theirjoy and relief. Her supporters organized a "Termination Rally"Friday, with a "Freedom Party" to follow across town in WestHollywood.
