A fire and explosion in the South Fork Dairy Farm in Dimmitt, Texas has led to the death of 18,000 heads of cattle as one worker was rushed to the hospital on Monday. 911 received multiple calls stating that thousands of cattle and one female worker got trapped in a fire at a milking parlor. When rescue workers reached the area at 7:00 pm, the noticed a thick plume of black smoke emanating from the plains.

The worker, who’s name has not been disclosed was rushed to a hospital in Lubbock, Texas via helicopter. She is still being treated at the facility for her injuries. The incident is the largest of its kind, not just in Texas but in the whole of the United States. According to the animal welfare institute, more than 6 million animals have been killed in barn fires. In their estimation, most accidents occur due to electrical faults.

Members of the agricultural community in the area have banded together and expressed their concern over the loss of cattle and property. The family dairy has sustained immense damage but have the support of agricultural unions in the region, which have vowed to support the farm in its time of need.
