3 killed as cyclone Fani pounds Odisha, PM Modi ails assistance

PURI, ODISHA:  Three people have been killed as Cyclone Fani stormed into Odisha this morning which caused devastation in nature uprooting trees and electricity poles. There were power cuts in many regions, due to the destruction caused. Huge areas in the temple town of Puri and other places were deluged perhaps due to heavy rain thrashing the coast. It is reportedly the strongest cyclone in India in last 20 years enfeebling moderately, moving towards West Bengal. PM Modi nails his political position by assuring at a rally in Rajasthan that affected people are supported by the nation and the central government is with them. He added that over Rs. 1,000 crore had been released in advance for the states affected by Cyclone Fani.

The major aftermath of the cyclone include:

o   All flights from Bhubaneswar were canceled.

o   200 flights from Kolkata were aborted.

o   The killed three people including a teenager in Puri killed by a tree which crashed in him, a woman in Nayagarh District was killed by flying debris and a 65 - year old woman in Kendrapara  died due to a heart attack.

o   West Bengal Chief Minister cancelled the election rally for a period of 48 hours in wake of the cyclone. 

o   A red alert was verbalized in Andhra Pradesh Srikakulam.

o   Over 147 trains have been cancelled till tomorrow.

o   The Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and disaster management agencies are all at stand by to assist the state.

o   Hundreds of medical staff including experienced doctors were not granted any leave till May 15.

o   Helicopter and shipping aids were used.
