403 Indian students killed in 5 years: Shocking statistics reveal the frequency of Indian students in foreign countries

It is no surprise that many Indian students are eager to leave the home country to settle abroad in search of better and more lucrative lives for themselves and their loved ones. But in recent statistics, it has come to light that a shocking amount of Indian deaths are witnessed in the foreign, particularly high numbers being witnessed in Canada.

In the past 5 years, 403 Indian student deaths have been recorded out of which 48 were recorded in the UK and 91 in Canada.

It is a well known fact that Canada is a hotspot for Indian nationals looking to cross borders, hence it is no surprise that most of the deaths have been recorded in the country, According to statistics, most of the students that are pursuing studies abroad have been going to Canada. In order to provide more context into why Canada is such a popular venue for immigration, here are some facts:

  • The first Sikh in recorded history to enter Canada was Major Kesar Singh, who was part of military contingent that was accompanying Queen Victoria in 1897.

  • In following couple of years, almost 5000 Indians relocated to Canada, out of which 91% of the population were believed to be Sikhs.

  • In 1960, Canada’s Liberal Party made immigration bureaucracy more accommodating  for Sikhs.

  • Statistics also report that as of 2021, there are nearly 18 Lakhs Sikhs in Canada, contributing to 5.1% of the Canadian population. The Sikh community is the fourth largest and fastest growing community of the country

  • A lot of Indian go to Canada in search of lucrative jobs which aids the employments statistics of the country favorably.

 

Some cases relating to Indian deaths abroad:

 

  • A family of 4 was found dead in New Jersey, USA. Out of these, 2 were children and the other 2 have been identified as Pratap Singh and Sonal Parihar. The children were aged 10 and 6 years old. Further investigation is being conducted.

  • A student was found shot dead in his vehicle in the state of Ohio in USA. In the incident which occurred on November 9, Indian student identified as Aditya  Adalkha was shot in his car and was declared dead on November 11. No suspects have been apprehended to date.
