Fifth phase of Lok Sabha election commences for 51 constituencies

This phase will witness the fate of many political heavyweights like Rajnath Singh, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Smriti Irani

New Delhi: The fifth out of seven phases of Lok Sabha polls commenced on Monday. Although the number of seats being less in this phase, it will still decide the fate of many eminent leaders.

The constituencies which go to polls are 14 constituencies in UP, 7 of 42 in West Bengal, 5 of 40 in Bihar, 4 in Jharkhand, 2 in Jammu and Kashmir (the first election in Ladakh division following its split from the Kashmir division earlier this year), 12 in Rajasthan, 7 in Madhya Pradesh.

This phase will witness voting in many high-profile seats. In Uttar Pradesh, both Rae Bareli and Amethi — constituencies which is regarded as the fortress of Congress — will witness a heated contest between Congress and BJP heavy weights.

Former Congress President Sonia Gandhi from Rae Bareli, who has held the seat from 2004, will face former Congress leader and current BJP candidate Dinesh Pratap Singh. In Amethi, Congress president Rahul Gandhi will contest against Smrithi Irani.

The fate of Rajnath Singh will also be decided in this phase as he is contesting from Lucknow seat. In 2014, Rajnath Singh, BJP (54.2%), beat Rita Bahuguna Joshi, Congress (27.9%), by 2.7 lakh votes.

Bihar: Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Muzaffarpur, Saran and Hajipur
Rajasthan: Ganganagar, Bikaner, Churu, Jhunjhunu, Sikar, Jaipur Rural, Jaipur, Alwar, Bharatpur, Karauli-Dholpur, Dausa and Nagaur
Jammu and Kashmir: Ladakh and Anantnag
Jharkhand: Kodarma, Ranchi, Khunti and Hazaribagh
Uttar Pradesh: Dhaurahra, Sitapur, Mohanlalganj, Lucknow, Rae Bareli, Amethi, Banda, Fatehpur, Kaushambi, Barabanki, Faizabad, Bahraich, Kaiserganj and Gonda
West Bengal: Bangaon, Barrackpore, Howrah, Uleberia, Sreerampur, Hooghly and Arambag
Madhya Pradesh: Tikamgarh, Damoh, Khajuraho, Satna, Rewa, Hoshangabad and Betul
