A question mark on credibility of the supreme court was created, when a 35 year old woman who used to work as a junior court assistant at the Supreme Court of India wrote to 22 judges of the court on Friday, April 19, claiming that Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi had made sexual advances on her at his residence office on October 10 and 11, 2018.
In her affidavit she wrote, “He hugged me around the waist, and touched me all over my body with his arms and by pressing his body against mine, and did not let go. He told me ‘hold me’, he did not let go of me despite the fact that I froze and tried to get out of his embrace by stiffening and moving my body away.”
On the other hand, CJI led a special bench hearing on Saturday and declined all the allegations made on him. He went on to say that he was targeted by some ‘forces’ because he is scheduled to hear significant cases next week.Special bench of CJI Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Arun Mishra and Rajiv Khanna on Saturday declared it would hear a ‘matter of great public importance’.
During the hearing the CJI said, “There is some bigger force behind the woman, with a criminal track record, making sexual harassment charges against him.” He also went on to say that this act is a step to destabilise the independence of judiciary.
Gogoi is scheduled to hear disdain petition against Congress President Rahul Gandhi, release of the biopic made on PM Modi, and the petition seeking postponement of elections in Tamil Nadu on the charges of huge bribe being paid to voters in the upcoming week.
