Diabetes usually develops over several years as the body ability to metabolise sugar and carbohydrates slowly declines. It is mainly caused by diet and inactivity but genes play an important role.

The study said that the people who gained weight who had the highest chance of developing diabetes. The most astonishing discovery, however, was that the risk of developing diabetes was unrelated to a person weight at the start of the study - be they at a healthy weight or overweight.

The study not only focused on weight loss to curb diabetes but also to maintain weight of whatever weight a person is currently at.
