Rs 300 per vote in Tamil Nadu, as IT seizes Rs 1.5 cr prior one day of bypoll

Andipatti, Tamil Nadu: Income Tax department on Wednesday seized an unaccounted cash of Rs. 1.50 crores to bribe voters from a party colleague of TTV Dhinakaran, the politician who broke away from Tamil Nadu's ruling AIADMK last year.

The IT department along with Election Commission officials carried out raid overnight on a leader of Dhinakaran's AMMK (Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam) in Andipatti.

Not only  94 packets of cash, with ward numbers and number of voters, but also markings on the packets which indicated the plan was to give each voter Rs. 300 as bribe was found.

The EC has already canceled voting in Vellore, post cash seizure from a warehouse of a DMK candidate on April 16.

Senior Income Tax officer B Murali Kumar who is also in-charge of the investigation said, “All these wards are within the Andipatti assembly segment, the premises belonged to a functionary of the AMMK party.”

He added, “A report on the operation will be sent to the Central Board of Direct Taxes and the Election Commission in New Delhi.”
