In a press release on Sunday, the government said, "Do not share your Aadhaar photocopies indiscriminately with any person or institution as it can be misused." Given this option, the government has advised sharing only masked Aadhaar. Only the last four digits are recorded on it.

Further, the notice issued by the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology states that unlicensed private entities are as hotels and cinema halls are not allowed to collect or keep copies of Aadhaar cards.

"Only those organizations that have obtained a user license from the Unique Identification Authority of India can use Aadhaar to establish the identity of an individual," the government said. The government asked citizens to verify that an organization has a valid user license from UIDAI before sharing their Aadhaar cards.

Additionally, the government has warned people not to use public computers in internet cafes to download their Aadhaar cards. "If you do so please ensure that you permanently delete all downloaded copies of e-Aadhaar from that computer," the government said in its advisory.
