While the Punjab elections were thought to be a straight fight between the AAP and Congress, new actors have entered the fray, making it a multi-cornered race.

According to opinion polls, the AAP has strengthened its standing ahead of the Punjab assembly elections and is poised to emerge as the single largest party.

The BJP is expected to suffer the brunt of farmers' discontent over the now-repealed farm regulations, as both polls suggest that the saffron party, which has allied with Captain Amarinder Singh's party, will win two seats.

In 2017, Congress won 77 seats in Punjab, while the AAP won 20 seats, making it the state's biggest opposition party.
