It was a narrow escape for 28 residents as a five-storey building collapsed in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad on Wednesday evening. The building collapsed after cyclone Tauktae passed the state, 28 people were vacated from the building keeping the cyclone in mind.  No casualties were reported during the incident. 

Reportedly, this building was situated in Ahmedabad’s old city Jamalpur which collapsed itself after a day of cyclones hit the state with strong wind and heavy rainfall. The building had started to sway on Tuesday due to which residents were relocated to a safe place. 

Talking to a news agency, DCP (Zone 3) Makrand Chauhan said about the number of deaths and injuries. He said, “The reason why the building collapsed is not yet clear and is a matter of investigation. It was built in 1997. Nobody was injured or killed in the incident as the building was timely vacated.”

The severe cyclone has destroyed the coastal area of the state. Many trees and over 6,900 electric poles were uprooted due to this cyclonic storm. Thousands of houses were damaged and about 5,000 villages experienced a power failure. 

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani assured that the government would undertake an immediate survey and would provide financial aid as per the government norms.

Earlier on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi undertook an aerial survey of the cyclone-hit areas and announced the compensation of Rs 2 lakh for those who have lost their lives and Rs 50,000 to the injured.  


The cyclone Tauktae made landfall between Diu and Gir Somnath district of Gujarat around 1:30 and till now about 45 lives have been reported. 

The monstrous cyclone Tauktae had started making landfall in Gujarat at around 9 pm on Monday. It was noted that the wind speed could be extreme up to 185/km per hour. Moreover, heavy rainfall was expected over the southern districts of Saurashtra and Diu on Tuesday.
