In yet another incident, a man was brutally thrashed by a group of locals in Punjab’s Kapurthala over suspicion of sacrilege. This comes a day after a man was beaten to death by a crowd of devotees in Golden Temple after he tried to commit the sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib.

The incident occurred at Nijampur village of Kapurthala on Sunday at around 4 am. Residents of the village apprehended the man in the early hours of Sunday at a gurdwara, stating that he was seen "already disrespecting" the Nishan Sahib (Sikh flag) at the gurdwara.

In a video streamed live on Facebook, Gurdwara caretaker Amarjit Singh said he witnessed the youth disrespecting Nishan Sahib when he came out for Nitnem (daily prayers) at 4 a.m. After being caught while disrespecting Nishan Sahib, the man tried to flee the scene. However, he was later caught, following which people brutally thrashed him with rods.

Meanwhile, the locals refused to hand over the accused to police. They claimed that the police station is not so far, however, they will not hand over him to the police. “We have called the Sikh group and they’ll decide what should be done,” said a local.

People could be seen hitting the man with rods in the video. Whereabouts of the man after people thrashed him are not known and police have not opened up about taking him into custody.

According to sources, the man was investigated before being beaten. “He claimed that he is from Delhi and was given money for the sacrilege,” said a local.

“He also claimed that his sister was also killed for sacrilege at another place.”

Yesterday, a man was beaten to death by pilgrims at the Golden Temple in Amritsar after he allegedly tried to commit sacrilege. The man jumped across the metal grill to enter the central enclosure of the sanctum sanctorum, picked up a diamond-encrusted sword to desecrate Guru Granth Sahib.

According to CCTV footage, the man who looked in his early 20s had arrived alone. The body was sent to a civil hospital, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted today. The man is yet to be identified, however, according to some media reports, he is said to be from Uttar Pradesh.
