Ahmedabad is the latest city to impose a ban on roadside selling of non-vegetarian food. Gujarat’s Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has imposed a ban on the selling of non-vegetarian food at the roadside stalls, from Tuesday.

Senior Town Planning Official Devang Dani, on Monday, was quoted saying, “Stalls selling non-vegetarian items will not be allowed along public roads and in the 100-meter radius of schools, colleges and religious places, Town Planning Committee of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has decided. The execution will start tomorrow,” as per ANI.

He further said that the decision was taken in the committee meeting after people of the city were complaining about its sale alongside the public roads.

To this, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said that it is not about vegetarian and non-vegetarian food and people are free to eat whatever they want to eat. CM Patel said, “It is not a question of vegetarian and non-vegetarian. People are free to eat whatever they want. But the food being sold at stalls should not be harmful and the stalls should not obstruct traffic flow”.

The Ahmedabad prohibition comes just days after the municipal corporations of Vadodara and Rajkot in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled state-ordered retailers and hawkers to cover non-vegetarian food, including eggs, because it may offend Hindu religious sensitivities. It further said that smoke emitted from such locations is hazardous to one's health.
