The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Wednesday declared 24 universities as 'fake'. This move was taken to carry its responsibility of maintaining standards of Higher Education in the country and save students from becoming victims of such fake universities by spending a huge amount of money. The UGC also clarified that these fake universities are not empowered to bestow students with any degree.
"It is observed that there are some institutions offering undergraduate or postgraduate degrees in various subjects, which are not established under either Central or State or UGC Act and hence, these institutions are fake universities/vishwavpidyalayas and do not have any right to confer/grant degrees," the education body said in a statement.
UGC has warned aspiring students to not pursue higher education courses with such self-proclaimed universities/vishwavidyalaya. At present, there are 24 such self-proclaimed fake Universities/Vishwa Vidyalaya in the country. According to the records of the Commission, these institutes/universities are functioning by violating the provisions of the UGC Act, 1956, UGC further stated.
Most of these universities are from Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.
