Sanjay Leela Bhansali said in a statement, "The story of Gangubai Kathiawadi has been very close to my heart. I and my team have given it all to make this dream possible. We take pride and honour in showcasing our film at the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival."

Gangubai Kathiawadi is a biographical crime drama chronicling the life of a girl named Gangubai from Kathiawad who became one of the most powerful, loved and respected women from Kamathipura during the 1960s. “Gangubai Kathiawadi” also stars Seema Pahwa and has cameo appearances by Ajay Devgn and Huma Qureshi. It also marks the Bollywood debut of TV actor-dancer Shantanu Maheshwari.

Gangubai Kathiawadi is produced by Jayantilal Gada of Pen Studios.  The film is set to release in Hindi and dubbed the Telugu language. The film was earlier scheduled for release on 30 July 2021 but it was postponed due to the rising cases. It was then scheduled for worldwide release in theatres on 6 January 2022, but to avoid a clash with S. S. Rajamouli's RRR, the release has been changed to 18 February.
